Reality Check: Contemporary American Trompe l'Oeil Painting
The art of trompe l'oeil (a French term meaning "to fool the eye") is part of a long tradition of illusionism that dates to antiquity. It continues to engage viewers today by inviting them to become immersed in the act of looking. This exhibition- inspired by the Brandywine River Museum's own collection of 19th and early 20th century American trompe l'oeil painting-will explore the genre in the 21st century through the work of contemporary artists who bring innovative and exciting approaches to the tradition. Over 40 works borrowed from private and public collections will be featured.
